The Region

The centerpiece of this region is undoubtedly mighty Mont Blanc, Europe's highest mountain and guardian of France's border with Switzerland. Amongst the awe-inspiring scenery of the French Alps you'll find traditional mountain villages, attractive lakes, and several of the finest ski slopes in the world. Also set within the snowy peaks is the beautiful spa town.

But Rhône Alps is not all mountains. There are also the renowned vineyards of Beaujolais and the Rhône Valley, national parks full of natural beauty and wildlife, and France's second city, Lyon. Here, the Musée des Beaux Arts houses an enormous art collection that is surpassed only by the Louvre, and when it comes to cuisine, many would say that Lyon is the gastronomic capital of the country. It is no coincidence that five of the country's top twenty chefs run kitchens here.

Chanaz Properties

This is a delightful and friendly village built along the banks of the Canal de Savières which links Lake Bourget with the river Rhône which is full of life with its bars and restaurants. Enjoy a drink or a meal with your friends sitting by the water or in the square.

Chanaz has a mairie, school, church, post office, tourist office and a museum. You will also find a bakers, a small supermarket and a shop selling local produce.

Before Savoy became part of France, Chanaz was an important frontier post with boats coming up the river Rhône from Lyons to Aix-les-Bains. Nowadays, you can take a boat cruise from Chanaz on to the Rhône or up to Lake Bourget during which the history of the village is explained. There is a working mill where walnuts and hazelnuts are ground up to make oil, you can enter without charge to see the mill working and buy some of the oil.

About Chanaz

If you have a boat there is a marina and boatyard on the other side of the canal. From there you can go through the lock onto the river or up the canal to the lake to spend a day water skiing, fishing, sailing, swimming or visiting the towns and villages along the lake.

Lake Bourget is a stunningly beautiful location surrounded by mountains. It is the largest natural lake situated wholly within France. Perhaps less well known than Lake Annecy but equally as beautiful.

The beach is only 5 mins away from Chanaz by car. There is another beach at Châtillon which is 10 mins away from where you can see the entire length of the lake as far as the Châine des Belledonnes mountains.

People come from all over Europe to go paragliding over the lake and to cycle. Famous cycle races such as the Critérium du Dauphiné have been through Chanaz. The véloroute – cycle path – from Geneva to the Mediterranean passes through Chanaz. Eventually this path will run for 650 kms and the section from Chanaz to St Genix sur Guiers is already complete. One of the favourite rides is the circuit of Lake Bourget, 55 kms, which takes in some steep climbs. A difficult challenge is the climb up the Mont du Grand Colombier (1530m.) – there are 3 routes up the mountain and the ultimate challenge is to do all 3 climbs on the same day!

A drive up the Grand Colombier is rewarded by some stunning panoramic views. On a clear day you can see Mont Blanc, Lake Bourget, Lake Annecy and Lake Geneva at the same time.

The area is well known for its walking and hiking and there is some excellent walking from Chanaz itself along the river Rhône or up into the woods behind the village. Chanaz is also on the Pilgrims Way from Geneva to Santiago de Compostela. This walk is becoming more and more popular and takes several months or several years if done in stages!

From Chanaz you can go for a day’s skiing to one of the nearby ski resorts, such as La Clusaz or Orelle which gives access to all the resorts of The 3 Valleys (Val Thorens, Les Menuires, Meribel, Courchevel). For cross country skiing close by there is Le Revard just above Aix-les-Bains and Plans d’Hotonnes.

The Abbaye de Hautecombe is worth a visit, just a 10 mins drive away. The royal family of the Duchy of Savoy had apartments in the abbey and the kings of Italy are buried in the church.

The old spa town of Aix-les-Bains is just round the lake. This town was a favourite visiting place of the royal houses of Europe. Queen Victoria visited on several occasions. There are beautiful parks and elegant buildings. Also, a casino with magnificent stained glass ceilings. The port area is pleasant to visit for a stroll along the lake and to have a meal or a drink at one of the many restaurants.

Chambéry Aix-les-Bains airport (30 kms away) has flights from all over Europe in the winter. Geneva airport is only 1¼ drive from Chanaz. Alternatively, trains go from Culoz station (7 kms) to Geneva airport with free parking at Culoz station. From Culoz you can also get trains to Lyon and Paris. The local station of Vions Chanaz (5 mins by car) has trains to Aix-les-Bains, Chambéry and Culoz
